Internship

Clinical Research Internship

ECU Health and the Brody School of Medicine are offering a yearlong internship in clinical research. Students will be exposed to clinical operations, research design and conduct, and academic medicine.

The deadline to apply is announced in the spring, with internships typically starting later in the summer.

The goals of our internship program:

  • Expose students to the inner workings of clinical research administration and academic medicine. We accomplish this by having students shadow clinical research coordinators, train on pharmaceutical clinical trials, and assist with data entry / regulatory filing.
  • Train the next generation of healthcare providers in research methods and best practice. Over the academic year, students will attend lectures, watch training videos, and work on projects that require them to think abstractly, problem solve, and explore various sub-specialties.
  • Allow students to meet with physicians throughout ECU Health and network with Brody School of Medicine leaders. We accomplish this through guest speakers, skills based workshops (such as resume writing and personal statements), and assigning interns to ongoing academic projects.

Ultimately, we like to help students achieve their goals of pursuing a career in health sciences or clinical research. A majority of participants in our program have gone on to medical school, graduate school, or started as clinical research coordinators after graduation.

As much as we would love to host everyone, this is a competitive internship. We will only be bringing on six (6) students for the year. Applicants need to meet the following:

Requirements

  • Must be a full-time (12 credit hours per semester or more) undergraduate or graduate student at ECU or UNCW
  • Must have completed at least one full-time semester at ECU or UNCW
  • Must have completed Group 1 Biomedical training through CITI (https://rede.ecu.edu/umcirb/mandatory-training/)

The program requires students to commit to a monthly meeting (listed below) and a weekly 4 continuous hour in-person block of work M-TH. For example, that could be 10 am to 2 pm on Tuesday or 1 pm to 5 pm on Wednesday, but it is only 4 hours a week and the 4 hours need to be continuous. Monthly meetings will be held on the 1st Wednesday of each month from 4:30 to 5:30 pm and feature either a physician speaker or training session.

Please note: we receive over 100+ applicants for this internship each year. We automatically drop incomplete applications from consideration. No extensions can be given for the deadline. We cannot provide individual feedback to candidates not selected.
